MDG Sand Phantom by CGVickers MDG Sand Phantom by CGVickers
Well I apologize for the size for those with slow connections. I'm not sure if this is the colour scheme I'll finish with but it's a good one to show none the less. I still want to throw on a few decals and last minute touch-ups but she's almost done. The final image will no doubt have a detailed BG to accompany it and will be a while be for I post it.

To explain a little about the design, without going into too much detail, I wanted this vehicle to be a close quarters combat vehicle & so I decided to incorporate the beam sabre directly into the hand to shorten draw time. The main armaments (Depending on design) would be folded back, just underneath & between the body and shoulders as a part of a second set of limbs.

This looks like it was done in vector, the details are so insanely precise. Was this created in photoshop using a Wacom, or did you use paths to draw out your lineart?

Everything is so clean and precise, it's mind-boggling. It reminds me of some of the most professional vector work I've ever seen.

Very well done!

Well thank you very much : )

Interesting designs. I used to be a huge fan of that style but eventually came to prefer the styles of Gundam and Patlabor and started working my own designs from what I thought were mistakes or areas that could be improved until I started developing my own style. I considered posting my earlier works but then I remembered how bad they were and thought better of it

Most of my mecha drawings started after watching Macross way back in 1986 and I've been drawing them ever since : )

This is a seriously Cool mecha design and a damn good job doing up the cammo pattern. It has a very sleek almost Patlabor Griffon feel to it. the only crit I'd add, and it's not really a crit in the negative sense, is you might want to add a dirt/rust layer to your PSD on some of your mechs and dirty the suckers up a tad to give them that lived in combat look. you'd be surprised how much a little dirt in the right place will take a piece like this over the edge. It's great as it is though, nice job man :)

Thank you very much and I'll definately take that into consideration for future designs. Unfortunately, I don't know how to do a convinciong dirt or rust look : / Any advice?

Hey you're welcome, it's an awesome piece.

And not a problem to give you a few tips on how to do some weathering on your mechs, it's pretty easy once you get the feel for it. Basically you want to create a new layer in your file, name it dirt or some such. Set the layer to multiply and move it over all your color layers but under your inks. You can set opacity on 100% or lower it depending on how visible you want your dirt. Now all you do is pick some browns, sepias, and rust shades and go to town. With the layer on multiply hues will be darker so browns will created anything from dirty shades to a look of oil runs. Rusts will show up pretty nicely though. As to how you apply it or dirty up your machine a good rule of thumb is dirt will collect around seams and cracks and it will settle in concave and depressed surfaces. A great thing to look at for ref is military modelers, mecha or otherwise, they are the masters of this. Also any real world photos of military vehicles in the field are excellent to look at. I hope that helps :)
